L’esprit du voyage

The Kabylie des Babors is one of the most secret and wildest regions in Algeria. Between sea and mountains, this Little Kabylie massif is home to exceptional nature: ancient forests of Atlas cedars and Numidian firs — an endemic species found nowhere else on earth —, Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, vertiginous waterfalls and natural pools with crystal-clear waters.

This 8-day trip takes you from the shores of the Gulf of Béjaïa to the pristine peaks of Babor-Tababort National Park, crossing this massif from north to south over 3.5 days of hiking. You will sleep at Ecolodge Aguemoun, nestled in the heart of the forest at 1125 m altitude, camp under the stars at Tamerjajoute, and find renewal by the legendary waterfalls of Oued El Bared.

Along the way, the summits tell their story: it was on Adrar Amellal that Kabyle fighters shot down an enemy plane in 1954 — an exploit that inspired the song Tira Safra, still sung today. The Tababort (1969 m), the meeting point between three wilayas, offers breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. And each evening, mountain Kabyle gastronomy — acorn couscous, Baghrir, wild honey and butter — celebrates the generosity of these lands.

*This trip was designed in close collaboration with Mahmoud Belaout, mountain guide and coordinator of the association for the development of Oued El Bared and the Kabylie des Babors. Passionate about his territory, Mahmoud is the keeper of these ancestral paths, this pristine nature and the living memory of the Kabyle mountains.

The association works towards developing ecotourism in the valley, preserving trails, promoting traditional know-how and fostering local cultural activities. It is the living link between travelers and mountain Kabyle communities.

By choosing this Détours Algérie stay, you directly support this initiative and contribute to the economic and cultural development of this exceptional valley.*

3h12 km

Start of the hike in early afternoon on a medium difficulty trail.

The trail climbs gradually while crossing the traditional Kabyle village of Aith Akik, before running alongside a large waterfall whose roar accompanies the first steps into the mountains. The path then rises towards the Tizi n'Tgourt pass, passing through Roman ruins bearing witness to Rome's former presence in these mountains.

Beyond the pass, the landscape opens onto clear ridges and high altitude meadows. It is while descending towards the talweg that the vegetation suddenly becomes denser — the first oak forests appear in the hollow of the valley, announcing arrival at the Aguemoun Ecolodge.

Warm welcome at the Aguemoun Ecolodge (1125 m), a former traditional dwelling restored in the heart of the Babor-Tababort National Park.

Traditional Kabyle dinner: barley or wheat couscous, Chakhchoukha or Rfis, accompanied by authentic mountain flavors.

Waking up in the forest. Traditional Kabyle breakfast: coffee and cow's or goat's milk served with olive oil, wild honey and butter, accompanied by Baghrir (thousand-hole pancakes), Sfenj (fritters), Mahkouka or Kesra Matbou' (griddle cakes cooked on embers).

Ecolodge AguemounEcolodge Aguemoun

6h22 km

Full day hiking through pristine nature. Departure from the eco-lodge through the exceptional forests of the National Park. Along the way, your mountain guide shares his knowledge of traditional medicinal plants: oregano (Ourmi), horsetail (El Khiyata), Tchi n'Tgara, rosemary (Iklil), thyme (Za'atar) and mountain thyme (Za'atar n'Tghalin). He also tells the rich history of the region.

The trail climbs via Thounirth towards the Adrar Amellal summit (1766 m). This summit is a place of memory: it was here that during the 1954 Algerian Revolution, Kabyle fighters shot down an enemy plane — a legendary feat that inspired the popular song Tira Safra (the yellow bird), still sung today. The guide also knows the locations of martyrs' graves nestled in the mountain, silent witnesses to this epic.

At the summit, an absolutely exceptional view unfolds over the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the high plateaus to the south — a panorama that words struggle to describe. Lunch at the summit. Descent and return to the eco-lodge at the end of the afternoon. In the evening, private concert by a traditional Kabyle folk group, in traditional costumes, to the rhythm of ancestral Kabylie songs and instruments from the Babors region.

Prestige dinner: acorn couscous (Seksu taa el Ballout), an extremely rare specialty from Kabylie's oak forests.
