Since September 2025, increased restrictions (mandatory escort in Tamanrasset) limit our camel treks and meharis, preventing us from taking the emblematic routes of the Atakor and Hoggar. These constraints undermine the very essence of our expeditions, founded on freedom and adventure.
We are suspending our trips, not without bitterness. Our circuits remain visible online, testament to these exceptional Saharan landscapes.
Tamanrasset, December 01, 2025
This mehari trek travels, over 4 weeks, through the great landscape diversity offered by the Hoggar, the vast Amadror depression and the Tefedest massif.
We begin this beautiful journey with the Atakor reliefs which we cross slightly east of Assekrem. The basaltic plateaus give way to the Hirafok plain and the chain of volcanoes north of Ideles, with the Amadror basin and its mythical salt flats as our objective.
The Amadror Salt Flats held an important place in Hoggar's economy in the early 20th century and represent a symbolic stop for our caravan, a vibrant tribute to the salt caravans that now belong to the past.
We finally leave the vast Amadror wadi basin to head northwest towards another mythical place in the Algerian Sahara, Garet El Djenoun. Located at the far north of the Tefedest granite chain, this mountain is a superb bastion that stands proudly 1,300 meters above the surrounding plains. Named "Mountain of the Spirits" by the Tuareg, it long remained shrouded in mystery and fear. Raymond Coche and Roger Frison-Roche made the first ascent in 1935, thus helping to demystify it. Its bypass to the north marks the beginning of the second major part of this beautiful itinerary.
Our caravan brings us back to Tamanrasset by following the western slope of the Tefedest. This granite massif oriented North/South extends for nearly 200 kilometers. We walk through the sandy softness of the Tefedest T'an Mellet (the White Tefedest), heading south towards the Igmaten domes which mark the end of the massif.
We approach the mythical and austere western edge of the Atakor through deep, narrow valleys with grandiose and wild scenery. This mehari trek is offered in two versions of different durations. A three-week version will be made possible by a vehicle pickup in the Adenek wadi south of the Tefedest.

Tamanrasset → Amadror
The route takes a fairly direct track that crosses the Atakor slightly east of Assekrem, via a pass at approximately 2,600 m.
We traverse large basaltic plateaus cut through by deep faults where the Issaqarassen gueltas (1950 m) and Iguef Mellen are nestled.
We descend towards the Hirafok plain (1,500 m), and after passing at the foot of the Ouksem volcano (1,196 m), we follow for a while the great Erarar wadi.
We enter the Tourha massif half buried in sand, and finally, at the level of Mont Azrou n'Fad, we turn towards the north-east to cross the Amadror basin in the direction of the Tissemt Salt Pans.
Although we know the track we are taking perfectly well, we can only give you the itinerary in its general outlines. Indeed, the precise detail of the route will be decided based on terrain conditions. For it is difficult currently to know the abundance of pastures and the state of water points. The stages will have to be decided on site based on these two factors to which the following factors are added: climatic conditions, watering of animals… We are pleased to remind you that this camel trek is more of an adventure than an organized and day-by-day programmed journey…
Ighalghar 🡪 Garet El Djenoun
Amadror → Ens Aguelmanen
The track crosses the watershed line of the two major river basins. To the north, the wadis flowed towards the Amgid breach and the great depressions in central Algérie; while behind us, the waters were lost in Lake Chad and the Gulf of Guinea. We now reach the head of the Ighalghar wadi. The landscape is immense and austere. We catch sight of the east face of Garet El Djenoun. Our caravan goes around it to set up camp to the north of it, in the Ens Aguelmanen wadi.

The Garet El Djenoun is an immense and majestic mountain that rises like a ship's bow above the vast plains surrounding it. After going around it, we reach the wide bed of the Ouhet wadi. We travel up it towards a water point adorned with a cluster of palm trees. The mountains around us are tall and majestic…
Due south, we skirt the western slope of the Tefedest massif. The Timaqatin cirque is a particularly picturesque site. Large rounded domes with smooth flanks rise from the sandy plain; the wadi dotted with tamarisks spreads out nonchalantly at their feet… Rocky and sandy passages succeed one another. We cross a succession of wadis, In Takoufé with sandy banks, Abezzou cluttered with enormous tamarisks, then the Adenek wadi.

We are now leaving the oued Adenek and through a pass, we cross at the foot of In Teferkit.
The caravan traces a route between the rounded masses of a few domes which are the last true foothills of the Tefedest massif. We now reach domes with smooth flanks like that of Igmaten (1478 m) which rises above the oued Tineleft (1000m). We are in the Aréchoum depression which separates the volcanic massif of the Hoggar from the granitic one of the Tefedest.
We can see before us the mountain barrier of the Hoggar and the dark mass of Mount Tahat. We travel through vast plains interspersed with granitic reliefs. We can even see the horizontal profile of the Assekrem plateau surrounded by volcanic peaks.
We slowly gain altitude. We can see, to the east, the tall volcanic peaks of the Atakor.
Tahat, the highest point in Algérie (2908 m) is our best landmark. We continue heading south through a succession of granitic thresholds and increasingly steep valleys. The track runs along an immense flow of dark blue basalt descending from the heights of the Atakor. We reach the rounded domes of the Tesselit of Tagmart after crossing the gentle plain of Essouf Mellen, the White Solitude.
Our camel trek is now reaching its destination, a short transfer allows us to return to Tamanrasset. Accommodation at the Caravansérail inn with full board.

Passeport
Pour entrer en Algérie, votre passeport doit être valide au minimum six mois après la date d'entrée dans le pays et comporter au moins une page vierge pour les tampons d'immigration.
Le document doit être en bon état (pas de pages détériorées, déchirées ou modifiées).
Visa
Les ressortissants de l'Espace économique européen, de la Suisse et du Canada doivent être en possession d'un visa valide pour entrer en Algérie dans le cadre d'un séjour touristique. Il n'existe pas d'exemption de visa pour ces nationalités.
Le visa doit être obtenu avant le départ, auprès de l'ambassade ou du consulat d'Algérie compétent selon votre pays de résidence. Il est conseillé d'en faire la demande plusieurs semaines à l'avance, les délais de traitement pouvant être variables.
Les documents généralement requis pour la demande de visa comprennent :
un passeport valide avec au moins six mois de validité résiduelle,
un formulaire de demande de visa dûment rempli et signé,
des photos d'identité récentes conformes aux normes requises,
un billet d'avion aller-retour ou une réservation,
une preuve d'hébergement (réservation d'hôtel ou invitation),
une preuve de ressources financières suffisantes pour la durée du séjour.
La durée de séjour autorisée est généralement de 30 jours, selon les conditions mentionnées sur le visa délivré.
Voyage avec des enfants
Les mineurs doivent être titulaires de leur propre passeport valide couvrant la durée du séjour.
Dans certains pays européens, lorsqu'un mineur voyage sans l'un de ses parents, une autorisation de sortie du territoire peut être exigée selon la réglementation du pays de résidence.
Santé
Aucune vaccination n'est officiellement exigée pour entrer en Algérie pour les ressortissants de l'EEE, de la Suisse et du Canada. Toutefois, il est recommandé de consulter un médecin ou un centre de vaccination avant le départ et de s'assurer que les vaccinations de base sont à jour (diphtérie, tétanos, poliomyélite, hépatite A).
Il est également conseillé de souscrire une assurance santé internationale couvrant les frais médicaux et le rapatriement pour toute la durée du séjour.

Les conditions d'entrée peuvent varier selon la nationalité. Les voyageurs concernés doivent se renseigner auprès de l'ambassade ou du consulat d'Algérie de leur pays de résidence.

Oui, un visa touristique est obligatoire pour les ressortissants français, à demander auprès du consulat d'Algérie (environ 85 euros, traitement en 2-3 semaines).
